The Victorian Supreme Court awarded $1.3 million in damages to Ms Mathews finding Winslow Constructions negligent for their failure to provide a safe working environment.
Ms Mathews was subjected to ongoing sexual harassment and abuse from 2008 to 2010, which included being shown porn and asked if she would do something similar, being called a “spastic” and “bimbo”, being questioned over her sex life and subjected to regular threats of violence.
Ms Mathews resigned from the position and later was diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses of Bipolar II disorder, anxiety and chronic post-traumatic stress disorder arising from the abuse she suffered at the hands of Winslow Constructions. She also developed a permanent jaw injury from grinding her teeth.
Doctors gave evidence that Ms Mathews would need regular monitoring and treatment for the rest of her life and was unlikely to ever be able to return to work.
